the churchill arms

A few nights ago a small group of us went to The Churchill Arms in Notting Hill. Apparently the place is an institution, and I can easily see why. It'd dedicated to Winston Churchill, with posters and pictures all around the pub. The ceiling is crammed with old metal lanterns, and the place is always packed full of people, ordering Fullers on draft and Thai food. Yes, Thai food. There is a Thai restaurant in the back of the pub, only accessible by walking through the pub. And it is amazing. We were told the wait would be an hour, but managed to grab a table within ten minutes. We ordered spring rolls to share, and then each got our own dish (one pad thai, one green curry, one stir fry with cashews) which we sampled from each other's plates. Though crowded and a bit rushed, the meal was exactly what I had been craving. I miss my Berkeley Thai food! (Sidenote: there doesn't seem to be Thai pineapple fried rice in England....)
