let's just add a "u"...

List of words the English add the letter "u" to:

neighbour
humour
rumour
favourite
colour
labour
honour
savoury

When I am writing articles at work my editor will fix my perfectly correct spelling and when I try to tell her that I know how to spell, it's just that I spell American and am not used to English, she gives me a funny look that says "American isn't a language."

I hadn't thought so until just recently.

Distinct British vocabulary:

jumper = sweater
pants = underwear (this mix up can be awkward...)
queue = line, as in a line of people
fag = cigarette
cheers = a friendly goodbye
bugger off = a not friendly goodbye/ shut up/ get lost
solicitor / barrister = lawyer (two different types)
loo = restroom
fit = attractive
knackered = tuckered out
row = fight
plaster = band aid
top up = add money or credit to a tube pass or calling card
mobile = cell phone
cheers = some word that has no exact relation for Americans, it's a mix of "cool" and "thanks" and "bye"
