Guy Fawkes Day: (aka Bonfire Night) when the whole of the UK celebrates the failed gunpowder plot of Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up parliament on November 5 in 1605. They burn effigies of Fawkes on giant bonfires, and set off fireworks equivalent to our fourth of July all over the country.
Kelly, Lauryn, Emily and I went to Battersea Park for the biggest gathering on Bonfire Night in the UK. There was a giant bonfire that let off a ton of heat (pictured below). By the time we got to the park and pushed our way through the crowds, the Fawkes effigy was already burnt to ashes.
It got super cold just before the fireworks started. This is Lauryn and I with our knit caps on looking like dorks and trying to be warm.
And then the fireworks started! It was the best fireworks show I had ever seen. The show was synchronized with music, to songs featuring the word "fire" - ie. Sex on Fire, Fire to the Rain, Fireworks. The fireworks were so close to the crowd, it felt like you were under them, not looking at them from afar. Very neat.
When we got home, we bought marshmallows and digestive cookies (wheat cookies covered in chocolate, they don't help regulate digestion like the name confusingly suggests, they are just delicious cheap amazing cookies.) We made smores (British style)!
