barcelona, day 1

The day began with a slow dreary crawl down the stairs at 3:30 in the morning. We caught a cab to a bus which took us to the Stansted airport where we flew to Girona, Spain, then got on another bus which took us the hour into Barcelona, where we walked for half an hour through the city to find our hostel on the beach. Exhausting.
But then we were in Barcelona!! Cameron met us at the hostel, and we all grabbed some food nearby for lunch. Then Cameron and I made our way via metro and train out to a beach in Ocata down the coast a bit away from the city. And we met up with Bret and his friend Mariah who is studying abroad in Barcelona for the year. We swam in the Mediterranean, I took a nap in the sand, and we eventually made our way back for dinner at Mariah's apartment. After some pasta and cookies and tea, the four of us found ourselves staring at some of Gaudi's famous architecture on the streets of Barcelona at one in the morning. Even at night the buildings make you stop and stare - it's impossible to walk by without a second glance!
Then we made out way to a bar called Chupitos that has a menu with over 500 shots. We tried a few interesting drinks and watched the bartender light a couple shots (and the bar) on fire. And then they took me back to my hostel where I promptly fell asleep.

Barcelona skyline from Ocata - my hostel was on the very
left near the tall building with one curved side.

Bret and Cam.

Gaudi's Casa Mila.

Gaudi's Casa Batllo - notice how the porches look
like skulls?
